We left a windy and rainy Columbus...
... but found ourselves in... similar weather in Charleston. And while the locals assured us that their city was indeed even more fun in higher temperatures, our family still managed to get out to the beach at the Wild Dunes Resort, write notes in the sand, and find (and lose) sand dollars. We also ate hush puppies and freaking amazing sea bass croquettes at Hyman's Seafood, had garam chai at Malika Canteen, and capped off the trip with a solid Thai meal at Basil. The food was blissful. My children got to spend some quality time with their Nanabhai and Nanu - we made memories.
Honestly, while Charleston has plenty of guided tours (boat rides, horse-drawn carriages, plantation visits, etc.), I found it to be a city where the most pleasant times spent were the ones where we just explored on our own - with no plans, no guides, no schedules... just us absorbing it all. If you find yourself to be a similar sort of traveler (or wanderer, as I like to put it), drive up to Legare Street and just meander around the old Colonial houses. The architecture is gorgeous, the blooms don't disappoint, and it's a great way to take it all in.
